If you knew something was holding you back from new opportunities, the recognition and potential promotion that you deserve, as well as more money… what would you do to stop it? The Modesty Mandate does just that. It is that unspoken societal and workplace rule coined by Stanford University researchers on the pressures women face to downplay their achievements and stay humble.
But staying quiet about your wins doesn’t help you—or your career. Which is why in this Fearless in 5, we will help you break free from the Modesty Mandate while staying authentic and true to yourself.
1. Frame It as a Team Win: You can share your success without sounding self-centered. Highlight the collaborative effort by saying, “I’m proud of how our team delivered on this project. My role was [insert achievement here].” Own your contribution while acknowledging others.
2. Let the Data Do the Talking: Numbers speak louder than words. Share results like: “The campaign I led increased engagement by 40%.” Data keeps the focus on outcomes, not ego. Remember, facts aren’t bragging—they’re proof.
3. Share the Story, Not Just the Result: People connect with hearing the how. “This was a tough challenge, but through strategic planning and collaboration, we turned it around.” You’re not just showing success—you’re showing leadership.
4. Flip the Script on Feedback: Next time somebody praises you, resist the urge to brush it off with, “Oh, it was nothing.” Instead, say: “Thank you! I worked hard on this, and I’m glad it made an impact.” Not accepting someone’s acknowledgement is an insult to them!
5. Create a Credit Culture: Normalize recognition by celebrating others’ wins publicly. “I’ve learned from amazing peers like [Name], and their support made this success possible.” When you give credit generously, it comes back around. It helps to fill up that karma jar!
Remember, no one is a mind reader. Your manager and teammates don’t necessarily know all the great things that you’re doing because we’re all running around too fast nowadays. Share your success!
